Shockwave therapy, formally known as extracorporeal shockwave therapy or ESWT, is a non-invasive treatment that uses high-energy acoustic pressure waves to stimulate the body’s natural healing response in damaged or degenerated tissue. It is particularly effective for chronic tendon conditions and injuries that have not responded adequately to other conservative treatments, making it a valuable addition to osteopathic care at Rejuvenate Healthcare Co. Unlike surgery or injections, shockwave therapy requires no downtime and can be delivered alongside hands-on treatment and exercise rehabilitation as part of a structured recovery plan.

How does shockwave therapy work?

A handheld applicator is placed against the skin over the affected area and delivers a series of acoustic pressure waves into the underlying tissue. These waves stimulate a number of biological processes that support healing, including increased localised blood flow, the breakdown of scar tissue and calcifications, stimulation of collagen production, and desensitisation of pain receptors in the area. For tendon conditions in particular, shockwave therapy helps to shift tissue from a degenerative state back toward an active healing state, which is often the key barrier to recovery in long-standing tendon pain. Sessions typically last 15 to 20 minutes and a course of three to five sessions is recommended, spaced approximately one week apart, for optimal results.

What conditions is shockwave therapy used for?

Shockwave therapy is most commonly used for chronic tendon and soft tissue conditions, particularly where symptoms have persisted despite other treatment approaches. At Rejuvenate Healthcare Co. we use it as part of a broader treatment plan for conditions including:

  • Achilles tendinopathy, a common source of heel and lower leg pain in active individuals
  • Plantar fasciitis and persistent heel pain
  • Patella tendinopathy affecting the front of the knee
  • Gluteal tendinopathy and greater trochanteric pain
  • Rotator cuff tendinopathy and shoulder-related tendon conditions
  • Tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow
  • Chronic muscle pain with persistent trigger points

Both our Manly and Brookvale clinics offer shockwave therapy as part of a structured osteopathic treatment plan, with appointments available across the week including evenings and weekends.

The level of discomfort during shockwave therapy varies between individuals and depends on the location being treated and the sensitivity of the tissue. Most people describe the sensation as a firm pulsing or tapping that can be mildly uncomfortable in the treated area but is generally well tolerated. Your osteopath will adjust the intensity based on your comfort throughout the session. Some people experience temporary soreness or mild swelling in the treated area for 24 to 48 hours following treatment, which is a normal part of the healing response.

Most people require between three and five sessions for optimal results, with sessions spaced approximately one week apart. Some chronic or complex presentations may benefit from additional sessions. It is worth noting that the full benefit of shockwave therapy often continues to develop in the weeks following the final session as the tissue healing process progresses, so results are not always immediate. Your osteopath will guide you through the expected timeline at your first appointment.

Shockwave therapy is safe and effective for the majority of people with tendon and soft tissue conditions, but there are some contraindications. It is not suitable during pregnancy, for those with implanted cardiac pacemakers, those currently undergoing cancer treatment, those who have received a corticosteroid injection in the area within the previous six weeks, or those with blood clotting disorders or on anticoagulant medication. Your osteopath will complete a thorough assessment and eligibility check before recommending shockwave therapy to ensure it is appropriate for your situation.
